The De Pere Christian Outreach Corporation is made up of the following churches:
Their mission is to work together to provide food, clothing, shelter or monetary assistance to De Pere area residents or to members of the member churches as needed. They operate a thrift store at 121 S. Superior St. and are guided by a board of directors consisting of one representative and the pastor from each church.
The store is operatored totally by volunteers from the member churches and is stocked through community donations. Household items, clothing and furniture are accepted. The churches also have a rotating schedule for picking up day old bread at a Seymour grocery store and delivering it to the Salvation Army three times a week.
The monetary help we receive is provided to area residents in need. This has included help with rent, utilities, food, car expenses, family medical care and school supplies. A food pantry, located in St. Anne's Church, is funded as needed and food is also donated by member churches. Any income over the designated amount for a contingency fund is disbursed throughout the community. Recipients of these disbursements include Cerebal Palsy, Salvation Army, De Pere Mental Retardation, De Pere Special Olympics, Freedom House, Golden House, the American Cancer Society, Young Artists Workshop, Camp Popp an Syble Hopp and the International Children's Fund.
The House that De Pere Built 2 became a reality this year beginning with a donation from De Pere Christian Outreach. The house was built at the corner of Cherry and Irwin Streets in Green Bay. All De Pere churches, St. Norbert College and several businesses participated in continued creative fund raising throughout the summer and worked together on the actual build. The house was dedicated in November 2002.
Ninety families were given help at Christmas 2002, and individual churches supplied gifts and food baskets.
Excess clothing from the store is regularly shipped to Africa.
Volunteers find the thrift store an enjoyable place to work, and more than 70 people volunteer on a regular basis. The store is open from 10:00 a.m. through 3:00 p.m. daily and from 10:00 a.m. until noon on Saturdays. Volunteers are always welcome on a regular basis or occasionally as they are able!
